Cholescintigraphy (HIDA Scan)
Used to diagnose obstruction of the bile ducts, disease of the gallbladder, and bile leaks
Colonoscopy
An endoscopy procedure used to detect abnomalities in the colon
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography
An examination of the bile and pancreatic ducts coming from your gallblader and pancreas
Esophageal Manometry
An examination that measures the pressures in your esophagus to see if it is working as it should
Esophogram
An x-ray test that shows the lining of the esophagus
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
An endoscopy procedure used to test the lining of your rectum and a portion of your colon
Liver Biopsy
Examination of a small piece of tissue from your liver for signs of damage or disease
Lower GI Series
Uses x-rays to diagnose problems in the large intestine
Modified Barium Swallow
A special x-ray that allows the doctor and the speech language pathologist to identify why you have trouble swallowing
Upper Endoscopy
A procedure used to look inside the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
Upper Gastrointestinal Study
An x-ray test of the stomach and esophagus
Procedure Preparations
Diseases and Conditions
Colon Polyps and Cancer
Extra tissue, called polyps, that grow inside your large intestine
Crohn's Disease
A disease that usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, causing inflammation in any part of the digestive tract
Gastric Bleeding (GI Bleeding)
Bleeding in the digestive tract that can occur as the result of a number of different conditions
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
A potentially serious condition, the most common symptom being persistent heartburn
Hepatitis A, B and C
Inflammation of the liver caused by several different viruses, sometimes acute (short-term) and sometimes chronic (prolonged)
Peptic Ulcers
Sores in the lining of your stomach or duodenum
Ulcerative Colitis
A disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine
Prescribed Diets
Lactose-Free Low-Lactose Diet
A diet often prescribed for patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
High-Fiber Diet
Can be used in the prevention or treatment of diverticular disease, hemorrhoids, constipation, cancer of the colon, Crohn's disease, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and irritable bowel syndrome
Clear Liquid Diet
Prescribed the day before the following procedures: colonoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP), liver biopsy, lower GI series, sigmoidoscopy
Low-Fat Diet
Prescribed for patients with gallbladder disease, delayed stomach emptying (gastro paresis), diarrhea, malabsorption of nutrients, or fatty liver
Low-Residue Diet
Prescribed for patients who are restricted to 10 grams or less of fiber per day
Soft and Mechanical Soft Diets
Used to transition from a liquid diet after surgery or a long illness, or for patients who have difficulty chewing or swallowing
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Diet
A diet designed to prevent or reduce acid reflux
