Do not take aspirin or aspirin-containing products.

Two days before exam:

Drink one (1) bottle of Citrate of Magnesia (available at any drugstore or grocery store, and the green kind only) in the morning. You may eat a regular diet.

One day before exam:

Drink one (1) bottle of Citrate of Magnesia (green only) in the morning.

Follow clear liquid diet one day before. No solid foods!
• Apple Juice
• Grape Juice
• Pear Juice
• Soda
• Gatorade (no red or orange)
• Popsicles (no red or orange)
• Jell-O (no red or orange)
• Beef or chicken broth
• Tea (no milk or cream)
• Coffee (no milk or cream)

Mix gallon of Colyte with water and put in refrigerator.

Have a clear liquid meal at about 6:00 pm. Do not eat or drink anything except the gallon of Colyte after that.

One hour after finishing the evening meal, begin drinking the Colyte. Drink a glass every 10 minutes until it is all gone. Do not sip it. It is normal to feel bloated and full. Try to stay on your feet while you drink the Colyte—this will help the Colyte pass through you.

If you feel that you are going to vomit, stop drinking for a half hour and try to walk. Resume drinking if the nausea goes away; you may need to drink the Colyte more slowly in order to get it all down. It is very important that you drink all of the Colyte. Call the office if these measures do not help.

If your exam is the next morning, have nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Day of exam:

If your exam is in the morning, take all of your morning medications with some sips of water at 6:00 am. Have nothing to eat or drink after that. If your exam is in the afternoon, take your morning medications with a clear liquid breakfast at about 7:00 am. Have nothing to eat or drink after that.

Come to the hospital with a driver and the paperwork you were given when the exam was scheduled.

Plan on being at the hospital for 3-4 hours.

You will not be able to work or drive until the day after the exam. You will need someone to drive you home.
