Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Preparation


One day before exam:

Clear liquid diet one day before. No solid foods!

If you are taking Coumadin, Plavix, Ticlid, insulin or pills for diabetes and did not receive instructions about these medications at the time the exam was scheduled, call the office immediately at (706) 548-0058.

Take all other medications as prescribed.

Drink one bottle of citrate of magnesia.

Take a Fleet's or tap water enema the night before the exam.

Day of exam:

Take another enema at 6:00 am.

If your exam is in the morning, take your medications with some sips of water at 6:00 am. Do not drink or eat anything after that.

If you are going to receive sedative medication during your exam, you must come to the hospital with a driver. You can drive yourself home if you are having the procedure without medication.

Plan on being at the hospital for 1-2 hours without medication or 3-4 hours with medication.

If you receive medications for the exam, you will not be able to work or drive until the day after the exam.
